Personal Statement

As an engineer recording and mixing music and radio drama and as a musician writing and performing, my aim is to use sound creatively. I am also developing web technology to facilitate music making.

Education

2007 - 2011 University of the West of England

BSc(Hons) Music Systems Engineering (first class)

Specialisations
  • Recording Technology - all aspects of studio practice particularly mixing and editing using ProTools, Reaper, Logic, Wavelab and Cubase.
  • Multimedia systems - specifically web development using HTML5, SVG animation and JavaScript.
  • Sonic Art - experimental works using various sensors, Arduino boards, games controllers and multi-speaker arrays.
  • Audio Processing - predominantly digitally using C programming, Max MSP and Reaktor5 with some experience building hardware effects.
  • Mathematics for Signal Analysis and Control
  • Architectural Acoustics and Noise Control Engineering

My final year project produced an online resource that generates structures for improvising music. Titled forHandclappers, the web site uses pseudo-random variables to create bespoke graphical scores for gathered musicians.

2001 - 2003 University of the West of England

Post Graduate Diploma in Creative Sound Production

Run by the BBC's Malcom Brammer, the course involved producing radio drama and sonic art to a professional level and included editing sound for TV and film.

Engineer

As an engineer I have recorded and mixed many local bands including projects for BIMM (Bristol Institute of Modern Music).

  • Setting up functioning recording situations in studio or on location.
  • Creating productive environments when working with groups of musicians.
  • Turning client's expectations into realistic goals and achieving them.
  • Submitting mixes to deadlines and in appropriate formats.

Musician

Warp Records' Broadcast released the LP Tender Buttons in 2005 and I was employed to translate the electronic sounds of the album into something performable by a group.
  • Developed the necessary technology using sequencers, samplers, MIDI and effects processors.
  • Toured the UK and North America with the band playing a variety of electronic instruments and effects. The tour included shows at The Barbican (London) and The Troubadour (LA) and sessions for various radio stations including Radio 1 at the Maida Vale studios.
Playing guitar and singing for the alternative rock band.
  • Performed throughout the UK.
  • Appeared on two LPs including the forthcoming Anti-Gravity for which I also contributed songs.

Bristol's pioneering trip-hop label.
  • Wrote and recorded the LP Submarine Address.
  • Working with producer Si John (Roni Size Reprazent) I was introduced to recording studios and the possibilities technology offers the creative musician.
  • Toured this LP in the UK and Europe.

Interests

For the past five years I have lead an electronic pop band, No Such Error, recording five LPs, promoting and gigging as well as building and maintaining a website. The band encourages outside collaboration and relies heavily on improvisation.

I am also keen on bicycle touring and in September 2010 pedalled 2000km from Bristol to Madrid.
